Rhodiola rosea(commonly golden root, rose root, roseroot, Aaron's rod, arctic root, king'scrown, lignum rhodium, orpin rose) is a plant in the Crassulaceae family thatgrows in cold regions of the world. These include much of the Arctic, themountains of Central Asia, scattered in eastern North America from BaffinIsland to the mountains of North Carolina, andmountainous parts of Europe, such as the Alps, Pyrenees, and CarpathianMountains, Scandinavia, Iceland, Great Britain and Ireland. The perennial plant growsin areas up to 2280 meters elevation. Several shoots grow from the same thickroot. Shoots may reach 5 to 35 cmin height. R. rosea is dioecious – having separate female and male plants.
Supporters of alternative medicine have made a numberof claims that R. rosea treats a wide variety of medical conditions - anywherefrom fatigue to cancer. Some studies have found support for it havingantidepressant effects. It is not approved by the U.S. Food and DrugAdministration (FDA) to cure, treat, or prevent any disease. In fact, the FDAhas forcibly removed some products containing R. rosea from the market due todisputed claims that it treats cancer, anxiety, influenza, the common cold,bacterial infections, and migraines.
R.rosea may be effective for improving mood and alleviating depression. Pilotstudies on human subjects showed it improves physical and mental performance,and may reduce fatigue.
In Russiaand Scandinavia, R. rosea has been used forcenturies to cope with the cold Siberian climate and stressful life. Sucheffects were provided with evidence in laboratory models of stress using thenematode C. elegans, and in rats in which Rhodiola effectively preventedstress-induced changes in appetite, physical activity, weight gain and theestrus cycle.
The plant has been used in traditional Chinesemedicine, where it is called hóng jǐngtiān (红景天).
The aerial portion is consumed as food in some partsof the world, sometimes added to salads.
